It’s been a long, long time coming, but Black Mirror is finally returning to our screens. And it’s about time – for a minute it felt like the show had seeped into real life. You know: global pandemic, new war in Europe and new Elon Musk era of Twitter.
As Variety reports, the Netflix series – which originally became a cult sensation on British television – is finally back in production, with sources promising a more “cinematic” approach for season 6. The news comes three years after season 5 aired on Netflix, which starred big names such as Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus and Jesse Plemons.
Production delayed due to legal issues
Production was reportedly delayed due to licensing issues with Black Mirror’s parent company, Endemol Shine, which Charlie Brooker and producer Annabel Jones parted ways with in 2020. Now, as part of the Banijay Group, Netflix appears to have finally managed to strike a deal to produce further episodes of the sci-fi thriller. However, neither Banijay nor Netflix are willing to comment on this exciting news.
Based on the cult series The Twilight Zone, Black Mirror has been a huge success. Each episode of the series is self-contained and explores near-future dystopias and various aspects of science fiction. The diversity in format, story and tone has earned Brooker’s creation wide acclaim over the course of its five seasons and 22 episodes. Among them, San Junipero, Nosedive, Bandersnatch and Striking Vipers are the most recent episodes to have won a number of awards over the years (including several BAFTAs and Emmys).
Since the series’ last big hit in 2019, Brooker has brought his dark humor to the successful documentary Death to 2020, which parodied the year of the pandemic and recently followed up with Death to 2021.
In any case, there’s still no word on when we can expect new episodes or how far along the team is with production. But stay tuned for updates as soon as there is news.
