If you’ve turned 18 recently, we’re sorry to start with. It probably wasn’t the 24/7 party and freedom you were hoping for as an adolescent. Those who dreamed of traveling the world – or even just leaving home for a short time – have been thwarted by the pandemic and the resulting restrictions.
Sitting on the sofa month after month and staying cooped up at home with parents would crush even the most optimistic among us. But the world is finally opening up again, and the idea of traveling will be at the top of many young people’s lists after the lockdown. Even more so if there is a way to travel around the EU for free: It’s called Discover EU.
Normally, this initiative offers 18-year-olds the chance to explore our continent with free passports. However, due to the pandemic, the age range has been extended to include 20-year-olds and even some 21-year-olds.
To get a passport, you first have to apply for it, although not everyone gets one. Nevertheless, it’s definitely worth trying, especially if you’re already dreaming of Rome or Vienna but your wallet isn’t deep enough. Those who apply must meet the following criteria:
- Be an EU citizen.
- Be in possession of a passport or a valid identity card.
- Be born between July 1, 2001 and December 31, 2003.
The application deadline is October 26. If your application is successful, you can use your passport for up to one month between March 1, 2022 and February 28, 2023 – together with your friends if they also receive the EU passport!
As more and more people appreciate the train as a more environmentally friendly and comfortable alternative to flying, numerous rail routes are currently being opened in the EU. You should definitely check them out – and of course read more about Discover EU on the European Union website. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to plan your next trip to Europe!
