Germans love Italian food. That’s not an assertion – it’s just a cold, hard fact. It also explains why Germany has five of the fifty best pizzerias in the whole of Europe. Again, this may sound like an assertion, but we won’t deny it: according to a ranking compiled by an Italian culinary guide, five of the fifty best European pizza restaurants are located in our country. Want to know which ones they are? These are the best pizzerias in Germany and how they were chosen.
The search for the best European pizzas
The aforementioned list is called “50 best pizzas in Europe 2022” and is compiled annually by 50TopPizza, a “guide to the best pizzerias in the world“. This Italian company also publishes such a ranking every year for Italy and the whole world.
But what are the requirements to rate this Italian classic? The inspectors from 50TopPizza test every restaurant they visit in up to seven different categories:
1. the pizza: the inspectors assess the combination of ingredients with almost as much attention to their quality and origin – regardless of the style of the pizzeria.
2. the service: from typical aspects such as politeness to the qualification and ability to explain the different pizzas and wines.
3. the ambience: In this category, the design is actually in second place behind the hygiene and well-designed premises of the restaurant.
4. waiting time: As the inspectors of 50TopPizza stand in line like any other normal customer, the waiting time until they are served or get a table is also evaluated.
5. wine: The preference is for local and regional wines and original wine lists.
6 Beer: The same principles apply to wines and craft beers.
7. drinks: Although less common in a pizzeria, mixed drinks are also considered.
Based on these qualifications, five German restaurants were voted the best pizzerias in Europe:
These are the best pizzerias in Germany
Pizzazulù
Surprisingly, the seventh position in this ranking and thus the first in Germany is occupied by a restaurant from Fürth. Pizzazulù can also boast 4.6 out of 5 stars in the Google reviews and an “excellent, contemporary pizza with an airy and light crust”.
Malafemmena
This restaurant in Berlin specializes in traditional Campania cuisine. And considering it’s ranked 14th and has been rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by more than 2000 reviewers on Google Reviews, it’s pretty successful.
Futura Neapolitan Pizza
Futura Neapolitan Pizza, which is ranked 25th, is also located in Berlin. Its trademark is the “traditional Neapolitan-style pizza, topped with the best Italian ingredients”.
60 Secondi Pizza Napoletana
The name of this restaurant in Munich says it all: only Neapolitan-style pizzas are served here. And baked too: the dough must rise for at least 48 hours and the pizzas are baked at a temperature of 500 degrees for a maximum of 60 seconds. So it’s no wonder that it comes 27th in the ranking.
Casa Nostra
Casa Nostra is also located in Munich and also serves traditional southern Italian dishes, but with a modern twist – which earned it 39th place in the ranking. But it’s not just the excellent pizzas that are the strength of this restaurant: Casa Nostra can also boast an excellent selection of wines to accompany its dishes.
