The second “supermoon” of the year, and also the largest, will light up the night sky from 22:00 tonight.
It’s only been a month since we were last able to admire one of nature’s most beautiful phenomena. And those who didn’t have the chance to enjoy it then will now have a second opportunity – only even better!
Because the “flower moon”, as the full moon in May is known, reaches its closest point to the earth on its orbit at exactly 1.14 pm. In some parts of the world – South America, South-East Asia and Australia – there will even be a complete lunar eclipse
And in Germany? Well, we will be able to enjoy the supermoon when it rises at 21:39.
But what exactly is a ‘supermoon’?
As explained above, full moons are referred to as ‘supermoons’ when they reach the closest point to Earth in their orbit. In this case, it will be 357,462 kilometers – much closer than the average distance of 384,400 kilometers.
According to NASA, this means that the moon will be 14 percent larger and up to 30 percent brighter than usual. However, the perceptible extra size of the moon may also depend on other factors, such as its proximity to the horizon or to other objects.
In any case, it is a phenomenon worth seeing and photographing. We’d love to see your pictures of it! To share them with us, simply tag us with #secretmünchen
