The Christmas market may no longer be taking place, but that doesn’t mean that Christmas in Stuttgart has been canceled. For the fourth year in a row, the ” Glanzlichter Stuttgart ” will shine and bring a beautiful Christmas atmosphere to the city center. From 3 p.m. tomorrow, passers-by can enjoy the beautiful spectacle of these atmospheric lights on Schlossplatz, Königstraße and even Schulstraße.
New this year is the light installation in Schulstraße. Inspired by the starry sky, 29,000 warm white LED light points and small light curtains on the sides make for an impressive sight.
Symbolic light sculptures
As in previous years, the highlight is the eight meter-high light sculptures set up on Schlossplatz. They represent the city’s eight most important tourist landmarks:
On the one hand, a Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing and a Porsche 911 stand for the two automobile museums. There is also the Stuttgart television tower, the sepulchral chapel and the Ferris wheel of the Cannstatt folk festival. The elephant sculpture stands for the Wilhelma and the wine glass symbolizes the Stuttgart wine village. And above them all is the Stuttgarter Rössle, as in the city’s coat of arms.
Sustainable lighting
Stuttgart-Marketing GmbH, operator of Glanzlichter Stuttgart, emphasizes that the light show is completely ecological. Both on Schlossplatz and in Königstraße, only LED lights are used, which require significantly less energy than conventional lighting. In total, there are 459,104 light bulbs in the two squares. The electricity used for the lights is also guaranteed to be 100 percent green electricity and comes from Stadtwerke Stuttgart.
Timetable
The light installation will be on display on Schlossplatz until December 28. The lights will be switched on daily from 3pm to 9pm, with the light and sound show taking place every full and half hour.
In Königstraße, the lights will stay on until midnight. The installation will also run for longer: until January 6, 2022.
