Today is a day that is accompanied by many beautiful customs. Perhaps you remember some of them from your childhood or still practice them today. In any case, we have selected the 4 customs that we find most beautiful on this day. Because great traditions like St. Martin’s Day are definitely worth continuing.
1. lantern walking
Admittedly, this custom is mainly for children. But a little nostalgia can’t hurt. What’s more, the special atmosphere during the St. Martin’s procession is incomparable for everyone. The beautiful lanterns and torches, the St. Martin’s songs and the St. Martin’s fire at the end of the procession create an incredibly cozy atmosphere. At St. Martin’s bonfire, the legend of the sharing of the cloak is usually re-enacted, according to which St. Martin shares his cloak with a sword and hands it to a poor beggar.
2. the St. Martin’s goose
Eating the legendary St. Martin’s goose is a special highlight on this day. It is often served with dumplings and red cabbage. Legend has it that Martin was to be appointed bishop, but did not want to take up the office and hid in a goose pen. However, the geese betrayed him with their cackling and so he was finally consecrated Bishop of Tours. Serving them for dinner must have been his revenge.
3rd Martinssingen
Children go from door to door presenting their beautiful lanterns during the beautiful Martinssingen. They sing traditional St. Martin’s songs. In return, they are given sweets, cookies or fruit. The tradition goes back to the custom of children of farmers going around the houses and singing before the start of winter to replenish their winter supplies.
4th Martinmas biscuits
Delicious pastries to accompany St. Martin’s Day are a must. In many regions of Germany, Weckmänner or Stutenkerle are baked. The little man made of yeast dough is available with or without raisins and is decorated with a clay pipe. The figure represents St. Martin – with the pipe as a symbol for his crosier.
We hope you will be inspired by these traditional customs!
