The“Foliage Train” takes its passengers on a journey through breathtaking landscapes in the Italian and Swiss Alps. Get ready for a perfect fall trip.
A journey through the Alpine autumn
The “Foliage Train”, operated by the Italian-Swiss Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway, offers a scenic journey through some of the most beautiful panoramic regions in Europe during the peak fall season. On a 52 km route that crosses two countries and 83 bridges. From Domodossola in the Italian region of Piedmont to Locarno in Switzerland, a picturesque town on Lake Maggiore. And all in just under two hours.
As if that wasn’t convincing enough, Lonely Planet has named the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway as one of the ten most beautiful railroad lines in Europe. To be honest, this comes as no surprise to anyone. The train journey “leads through a varied landscape with deep gorges, wild mountains, rivers and waterfalls”.
Nature and city exploration
The tickets also include an optional stopover on the outward or return journey, allowing travelers to explore a place of their choice along the train route (e.g. Santa Maria Maggiore, Malesco, Druogno and others). Not forgetting the start and end stations themselves: Locarno and Domodossola, two towns rich in history and culture, offering medieval castles and magnificent squares.
If you want to experience even more, you can add on various adventure tours. From hiking through the forests and nature parks of southern Switzerland to climbing on impressive Alpine cliffs.
The tickets are valid for one or two days and cost less than €33 for adults in second class. This means that most of the cost for travelers from Germany is for the journey to Italy or Switzerland. You can find more information on the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway website. And you can book your tickets for the perfect fall trip.
