Cars, pretzels and things for free: This is perhaps the most Swabian thing the state government has ever done.
Anyone who has ever toyed with the idea of cycling to work will hardly get a better opportunity. Yesterday, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport launched a campaign in collaboration with dozens of bakeries to promote commuting by bike.
And the strategy behind the campaign is as simple as it is attractive: free pretzels throughout Baden-Württemberg. The only requirement for a free breakfast is a visit to one of the 73 participating bakeries and 554 branches in the state before 10 am. A bicycle helmet is required as proof.
The campaign was presented by Transport Minister Hermann and is to continue until September 24. In a statement from the Ministry of Transport, reference is made to “the positive effects of cycling in commuter traffic”. “People who cycle more often are healthier, more efficient and less stressed – and are also doing something for climate protection.
German private companies have been encouraging their employees to cycle to work for many years. But it is difficult to remember such an incentive from a public institution. Pretzels could thus become the new biofuel in Baden-Württemberg, as some have already explained. But mixing cars, pretzels and getting things for free is perhaps the most Swabian thing the state government has ever done.
