Good news for all fans and supporters of the Bridgerton family: the second season is almost finished and will be released soon. Series creator and showrunner Chris Van Dusen announced this on his Twitter account last week. “This is the end of the second season,” he wrote.
Following the huge success of season 1, it was announced in April this year that the series would be renewed for a total of three seasons. Production on the second season was to begin immediately at various locations in London. However, the increasing infection rate of the pandemic, with as many as two cases among the film crew, halted filming several times. In his Twitter announcement, Van Dusen therefore also thanked the cast and crew “who have been working flat out every day during this very challenging year.”
Netflix’s record-breaking series
Produced by hit showrunner Shonda Rhimes, the series is based on the novel series of the same name by Julia Quinn. In Regency-era England, Daphne Bridgerton, eldest daughter of the aristocratic Bridgerton family, makes her debut in the competitive London marriage market. But her family’s plans for her are thwarted when she finds herself increasingly attracted to the rebellious Duke of Hastings.
Notorious for its depiction of social diversity in 19th century English high society, “Bridgerton” was a record-breaking series for Netflix. The 8 episodes were watched by 82 million households in its first 28 days of availability, a figure only surpassed by The Squid Game in October this year. The series remains the second most-watched series on the platform. In addition, the series has been highly praised by critics and has even been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards.
What to expect from the second season
While the first season focused on Daphne Bridgerton’s search for a suitable husband, the second season will revolve around Lord Anthony Bridgerton. As Daphne’s older brother, he already had a say in his sister’s choice of husband. But now he will go in search of love himself.
Netflix already released a scene from the new episodes at a fan event in September, which you can see here. From this, we can deduce that Anthony will be involved with the Sharma family. While the return of characters from the first season is expected – Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne, Jonathan Bailey as Anthony – the biggest surprise was certainly the departure of co-star Regé-Jean Page (Duke of Hastings).
In any case, now that filming is over and the new episodes are in post-production, we can only wait and guess what new twists of love and passionate affairs “Bridgerton” has in store for us. That won’t be the case for another few months.
