After nearly 7 days of blocking one of the main marine highways, the stranded boat has been freed – meaning normal traffic could soon resume.
According to the SCA, the Suez Canal Authority, the rescue team of dredgers and tugboats pulled the massive vessel more than 100 meters away from the shore on Monday morning. The team took advantage of the high tide during the night.
At the moment, the unblocking procedure has been halted and they are waiting for a new high tide (expected at 11:30 local time) to turn the Ever Given northwards in complete safety and tow it out of the channel. This is a slow task considering the enormous weight of the vessel and its still intact cargo.
So there is still no estimated time for the more than 350 ships waiting on both sides of the Suez to continue their journey.
That hasn’t stopped many from celebrating the beginning of the end of the blockade as a memorable victory – especially for the members of the rescue team.
