IKEA recently unveiled a sustainable mobile home.
Many people like to go on vacation with a caravan: it offers independence and freedom from hostels, travel agencies and really almost any logistical planning. However, motorhomes are not without their drawbacks: They are not very comfortable and not very environmentally friendly to boot – the reason why they are only allowed to stay in designated areas.
Well, people in the north must really love their caravans, because IKEA has decided to build the most perfect home on wheels.
It’s a trailer 8 meters long (so 17 square meters of interior space) that is – you guessed it right – furnished and decorated with the products we can find in any of the Swedish giant’s warehouses. On top of that, its simple and rustic exterior design blends in very organically with its natural surroundings – almost as if it were a cabin.
But now to the important stuff: How sustainable is it really?
For starters, it stores rainwater and recycles it for the toilet and non-potable use. The caravan is also equipped with large windows, LED lights and energy-saving appliances. The entire electrical system uses photovoltaic panels and storage batteries. What’s more, the building materials are also environmentally friendly. The walls are made of FSC-certified wood and the accessories are made of recycled PET plastic.
In total, the house costs between 40,000 and 60,000 euros. A price that many nature and freedom lovers are certainly willing to pay. You can take a virtual tour here.
