In recent years we have learned how important bees are for nature and humans, so we need to protect them. For this reason, we would like to give you two tips on how you can make your balconies bee-friendly…
A warning:
Don’t try this at home if you have a pollen allergy. As you probably know (or should know), bees feed on pollen. To make your balconies a welcoming place for them, you need flowers that produce a large amount of nectar and pollen. But you don’t have to sacrifice your own health for them.
A second warning: don’t confuse bees with wasps
We can recognize our bee friends by the fact that they are hairy and have a squat body, while wasps are hairless and the gap between the thorax and abdomen is more pronounced. Unlike bees, wasps can pose a danger to both humans and nature. Some wasp species can even destroy entire beehives.
Basics: Use bee-friendly plants
Bees are not only attracted to any plant that smells good. Like the best gourmets, they have clear culinary preferences. In general, bees like wildflowers. Many of them look particularly beautiful and are a cheaper alternative to common balcony plants.
Don’t be stingy hosts: build a hotel for your bees!
So that the bees don’t have to travel too far to your flowers, you can buy them a so-called “wild bee hotel” or build one yourself. The main thing is that you replicate the honeycomb with wood so that the bees feel at home.
