The Indian Ocean is not normally known for its vibrancy. Here you are more likely to encounter endless, lifeless expanses below the water’s surface. But scientists have now discovered a completely new ecosystem in the depths of the sea. Find out more about the oasis of life off the Maldives here.
A new ecosystem
The Nekton Maldives mission with scientists from the University of Oxford found the “trapping zone” in the depths of the Indian Ocean – at a depth of 500 meters to be precise. And were surprised to find such a diverse, vibrant ecosystem at such depths. The volcanic underwater area consists of steep terraces and cliffs that form a dramatic backdrop. Here, the researchers discovered all kinds of predatory fish, such as schools of tuna, sharks, angelfish, angelfish and other species. The reason for this is plankton, which gets caught in the cliffs on its morning journey into the depths of the sea, collects there and is a perfect meal for the predatory fish.
The discovery of the tapping zone off the Maldives not only offers new insights into the Indian Ocean, but also for other areas of the world. The researchers suspect that the “trapping zone” is not an isolated case. The researchers found the new ecosystem using the Nekton Omega Seamaster, a submarine for research purposes.

Protecting the ocean and the trapping zone off the Maldives
The surprising diversity found in the depths of the ocean is helping researchers to better understand it. Are there perhaps more ecosystems beyond 500 meters? The research is also aimed at protecting the ecosystems and reefs in the sea. Just like the trapping zone off the Maldives. Tourism and fishing should therefore be regulated. This is because areas like the Maldives, which are surrounded by the sea, need special protection due to the climate crisis. A great mission with an exciting discovery. Find out more in the video.
