You may not be particularly romantic, you may even be openly against Valentine’s Day. But there’s no denying that Ludwigsburg has something special. Anyone who has ever visited the Residential Palace, strolled through the beautiful Baroque in Bloom and along the city’s impressive avenues knows this. And it’s the same with Stuttgart, its vineyards and many parks. It is one of the most romantic cities in Germany.
We are not the only ones to say this, as a report by the online portal Travelcircus proves. Using a complex system of calculations and ratings, it has compiled a ranking of the 14 most romantic cities in Germany.

The complex method of finding the most romantic city
Travelcircus is an online booking platform for premium travel experiences. On the eve of Valentine’s Day, Travelcircus investigated which German cities are particularly attractive for couples. To do this, the creators of this ranking analyzed all two thousand German cities and compared them according to the Google search volume of romantic keywords – such as “Valentine’s Day Munich” or “Berlin Valentine’s Day”. The top 100 cities with the highest search volume per inhabitant and the top 100 with the highest search volume per area entered a second round and were analyzed further.
These 200 cities – 130, excluding duplicates – were then evaluated in five different categories:
1. the density of romantic restaurants in a given area (according to TripAdvisor)
2. the density of cinemas in a given area (data from cinema.de)
3. romantic posts on Instagram divided by the population of the respective city – based on the location of these posts
4. the search volume of romantic keywords plus a city name in an area and divided by the number of inhabitants of each city
5. plus points for the natural and historical value of the city. Here, the preservation of historic buildings and the presence of rivers, parks and lakes were evaluated.
A maximum of 5 points were awarded for each category, except for the extra score, which was only 4. Once the scores for each of the 130 towns had been distributed, they were added together to give a final score of a maximum of 24 points. This is how the 14 most romantic cities in Germany were determined.
The most romantic cities in Germany
Surprisingly, it turns out that the most romantic city in Germany is Munich, with a total of 15.60 out of 24 points. Kühlungsborn (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) is in second place and close to the metropolis on the Isar, while Tegernsee (Bavaria) is in third place. In general, most of the romantic towns are located in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
As already mentioned, Ludwigsburg and Stuttgart are in 6th and 8th place respectively. The “Swabian Potsdam” scored particularly well with its many cinemas – a perfect 5 out of 5 – as well as with its romance search volume. In the case of Stuttgart, it is the high number of romantic restaurants and the praise in the extra points category that secure its place. Travelcircus cites the “exciting cityscape with vineyards, green parks, the Neckar Valley and charming architectural monuments” as the reason for its high ranking.
However, the low number of points that Ludwigsburg and Stuttgart received in the Instagram rating is also striking. This could mean that the Swabians are not very romantic or, more likely, that they are not as willing to share their romantic moments on social media as other Germans.
